Favorite Images from 2013

A good photography friend of mine from France (Kristel Schneider) recently published a fun blog from her photography efforts in 2013 entitled:

Her photo work is very beautiful and inspirational for myself.   Well worth looking at her work and visiting her web site :

Inspired from Kristel's beautiful images, I decided to put my favorites from 2013 for others to see.   Some of these I have posted in my blog and some you may not have seen.

So here are my favorites from 2013.

Summer Landscape

Summer has officially arrived and with the turning of the season, the summer wild flowers are starting out.

One of the newer restoration areas in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a wetland area.   The national park has reclaimed this area over the last 4 or so years and the huge amounts of wild flowers in bloom speaks volumes.

The above image was captured on a foggy morning last week.   The huge landscape of daisy and balck eyed susan images is really impressive.

Some of you may recall tat last summer I concentrated on this area.   The number of insects and plants is really impressive.  This is also a great area for photographing white tailed deer among the wild flowers.

As I venture out to the area more often now that we are in summer mode, I'll keep you posted on my photographic findings.

1 Year Anniversary for the Blog

Hard to believe I started this web blog one year ago.   My first photos shared had deer in Cuyahoga Valley Nation Park during the fall rut.

The rut is upon us again.   I haven't been quite as lucky in capturing some of the beautiful animals this year.  Yesterday, I got one of the photos I've been hoping for over the last few years.

This shot is a female white tailed deer that is backlit.  This means the morning sunlight creates the light in front of the lens and creates a glow in the scene captured.    Getting the deers morning breath was a bonus that gave this scene an extra burst of energy.

Hope you have enjoyed the past years blogs and are looking forward to more comments and photographic ideas into 2013.

Belated start of fall

Indigo Lake Sunrise

The fall season is upon us here in Northern Ohio.    Probably my favorite time of year.  The air is cool, the leaves are changing into the beautiful colors to treat the eye.

After a very harsh, dry and hot summer, the changing of the colors was very much in doubt.   Luckily, mother nature has decided to grace us with an early display that promises color riches over the next few weeks.

The above image is from my favorite location in September for a colorful sunrise.  The beautiful Indigo Lake in the Cuyahoga Valley National park has a spectacular display of golden rod and the air can be ripe with beautiful morning clouds.

As the air changes, so does the resident deer.   The white tailed deer begin the mating season and it can make for a beautiful display of deer among the changing fall colors.

Finally is the start of the gran show itself - COLOR int the leaves.

The early signs are very nice.   So lets hope the color continues and I can find enough time to capture the scenes of fall.

Enjoy your fall season.

Oh.....Deer!!!!!

I've been sharing a lot of mornings with the white tailed deer during this mid summer season.   The males have there antlers all grown out and the velvet coating is fun to see.    The mature males, are starting to get more cautious of people and are starting to develop more hormones that will get them into a mating frenzy come October and November.

Luckily the females and younger males are still pretty tolerant of photographers.   They are easily spooked by movement, but when you remain still and respectful of 'there space', they can be curious and want to see what you are up to.

When you find a nice summer landscape to photograph the deer, it can be a very rewarding experience to share a morning with the largest mammal in my back yard of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park Wetland Restoration

The Cuyahoga Valley National Park has established a wetland restoration area near the Boston Store visitor center.   This has been an ambitious process to slowly restore native grasses, flowers, plants and animals to this part of the park.

Recently I was walking around the area and found the most impressive display of native flowers called black eyed susans.  A fairly common native wild flower that likes these types of 'disturbed' areas. It is impressive to see such a large amount in a relatively small space.

This is one of the restored ponds.  The park biologists check water content and quality to insure that the goals of restoration are being meet.

During my early morning outings to the area, white tailed deer are abundant.  The combination of flower landscape, along with the deer make for a beautiful setting.

Being a lover of insects, I was most anxious to check out the black eyed susan flowers.  They are favorites of katydid, grasshoppers and various other insect types.    The above is one of the largest katydids in this area - the bush katydid.    They are so large, they occupy the entire flower.

Then while heading back to my car the other morning, this red squirrel was eating a nut on a tree near my car.   I setup my camera to try and photograph the cute squirrel and it ended up dropping its meal.   I was able to get a bit closer because the squirrel was not going to leave.   It was waiting for me to leave so it could go down to the ground to pick up its morning meal.    It kept looking at me and finally after about 15 minutes the squirrel began to rest.  You can almost hear it saying 'Are you done yet??!!!'.   I got the message and left the cute squirrel to finish its meal.

White Tailed Bucks

The deer mating season or 'rut' is just about over.  The male bucks are getting less aggressive and staying further away from the photographers they encounter.    The female does are far less concerned about what is going on around them.

So the prime opportunities to photograph the white tailed deer during the rut is over.  Luckily I had a few nice days to take advantage of the deer and capture more nice white tailed deer buck photographs.

This guy was resting along the road..  He had several female does in his harem, but was resting while trying to keep track of all of them.

This buck was one of the medium sized deer. He was keeping track of the larger bucks across the way.   He seemed as interested in the large bucks as he was in the female does of his harem.

Deer Rut

The white tailed deer are in PEAK mating form. Was out this morning for a few hours and the bucks were very active. I saw 2 large bucks fighting for territory, but was not able to capture the action. The following is my best from this morning and probably my best image for the deer this season.

This is a female and she was watching a large buck off in the distance.

Deer in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park

During November, the white tailed deer are in the mating season.   The 'rut' brings out a lot of deer activity which offers the photographer an opportunity to see and photograph the deer.  Here are a few samples from the past few days.

The technique to capture these images is probably the easiest nature photography you can imagine. The deer themselves are fairly approachable in a slow moving car. So photographers will drive around the park, find some deer and just stop and photograph the deer from the car.

The key being to stay in your car.    The deer are much more skiddish of movement - especially if you get out of your car.   So grab your camera, hop in the car (with your warm cup of coffee) and take a nice leisurely drive to find some deer.

You can view my current deer images along with images from 2010 at my smugmug web site:
